Category: 12 Inch Vinyl Record

This superb rare, deep and spiritual jazz opus album was recorded at the Immanuel United Church of Christ, Los Angeles, in 1979.

The music of Horace Tapscott and The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra is part Sun Ra Arkestra, part John Coltrane, part Art Ensemble of Chicago. This ground-breaking and monumental album explores the multi-faceted deep and spiritual jazz of Tapscott – Afro-centric rhythms, hypnotic bass lines, Tapscott’s stabbing modal piano playing and stunning flute and horn arrangements. “The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra – Live at I.U.C.C.” is a true high point in the cannon of great independent underground jazz music recorded during this era.

Available at Superjumbo Records in Downtown Aurora, IL.

Violet Q. ★★★★★

The church recording captures that raw, live energy perfectly, and you can almost feel the congregation breathing along with the Arkestra. I’ve never heard stereo separation this crisp on a 1979 live session.

Emily ★★★★★

The stereo separation really brings out each instrument in the Arkestra, making this 1979 church recording feel incredibly alive. The pressing is quiet, letting the deep spiritual jazz breathe without any surface noise.

Carter ★★★★★

The ambient church recording gives this vinyl a breathtaking, cavernous reverb that makes the Arkestra sound like they're playing right in your room. I was blown away by the clarity of the stereo separation on this 1979 spiritual jazz set.
