$14.6 $20 In stock

Category: 12 Inch Vinyl Record

This album marks Thelonious Monk's sole recording as a member of Art Blakey's celebrated Jazz Messengers. The pianist and drummer were very close friends who understood each other well on both a personal and musical level. In fact, Blakey was present on both Monk's first and last studio sessions, spanning a period of 24 years from the 1947 quintet and trio recordings to the last sets taped in London in 1971, when Blakey and Monk were touring with the group called the "Giants of Jazz" (which also included Sonny Stitt, Dizzy Gillespie, Kai Winding and Al McKibbon).

Limited 180-gram red colored vinyl with two bonus tracks.

Eva O. ★★★★★

That 180-gram red vinyl feels substantial in your hands and the pressing is dead quiet, letting every note of Monk's unique phrasing shine through. I've listened to this session for years on CD, but this version makes the drums sound like they're in the room with you.

Thomas ★★★★★

Monk and Blakey’s chemistry jumps right out of these grooves—the interplay on the fast numbers feels almost telepathic. The 180g red vinyl is dead quiet between tracks, which lets the piano and drums breathe properly. Glad I grabbed this one for the collection.

Jacob P. ★★★☆☆

The red vinyl pressing looks sharp, but there's a faint surface hiss between tracks that I didn't expect on a 180g record. The music itself is fantastic—Monk and Blakey clearly feed off each other—just wish the audio felt a bit cleaner for the price.
