O trabalho em "Compassion" começou em 2018 quando Gabriel vivia em Nova Orleães. As canções em que estava a trabalhar na altura—faixas que não se encaixavam na Lawn mas de que Gabriel ainda gostava—ficaram inicialmente por terminar.
