Discover how much music fits on a 7 inch vinyl record, typical track lengths for 45 rpm singles and EPs, and what to expect from this compact format.
Quick answer
A standard 7 inch vinyl record spinning at 45 rpm typically holds about 4 to 6 minutes of music per side, making it perfect for singles, two-song EPs, or short collections. The exact track length depends on groove spacing and mastering choices.
Why 45 rpm is the standard for 7 inch records
Most 7 inch records are cut at 45 rpm instead of 33⅓ rpm. The faster speed allows for better audio quality and louder playback because the grooves are spaced farther apart. The trade-off is shorter playing time—typically around 4 to 6 minutes per side. If you need more than 6 minutes per side, you might consider a 10 or 12 inch record.
What about EPs and multi-track 7 inches?
Some 7 inch records squeeze three or four short tracks onto a side by reducing groove spacing or lowering the volume. This can compromise audio fidelity and cause distortion on loud passages. For a clean, loud pressing, stick to two tracks per side or a single longer track.
Frequently asked questions about 7 inch vinyl track length
- How many songs fit on a 7 inch record?
- Most 7 inch records hold one song per side (a single), but some hold two short songs per side, giving a total of four tracks. The total playing time per side is usually 4 to 6 minutes.
- Can a 7 inch record play at 33⅓ rpm?
- Yes, but it's uncommon. Playing at 33⅓ rpm gives you about 8 to 10 minutes per side, but the audio quality and volume are typically lower. Most 7 inch records are designed for 45 rpm.
- What is the difference between a single and an EP on 7 inch?
- A single usually has one main track per side (two total). An EP (extended play) typically has two or three tracks per side, but still fits within the 4–6 minute limit per side. If you need more than 12 minutes total, you're looking at a 10 or 12 inch record. When buying a 7 inch, check the track listing and total runtime to ensure it matches your expectations for sound quality.
